Quilled lanterns on CNY cards
03:35 |I wanted to make some Chinese New Year cards for my neighbours this year. I didn't have time to make complicated and overly fancy cards for them this year, therefore I opted for something really simple and fast to do. So I decided to make these quilled lanterns. It's the first time for me to make them. They are not that difficult to make too.
I made two types, one vertical card and the other a horizontal one. The horizontal one has pop up cherry blossoms inside it. I haven't been making new pop up card designs for quite a while now. It was great fun making them this year. Really thrilling even though it was a simple one :). Gosh...I'm so easy to please hahahaha!!
You can view how the cherry blossoms pops up inside the card at the video below. :)

Finally the card is done! I can't believe I did two things that I've never done before in one card ;). Yup! One is the quilled alphabets and the other is the pop up heart. I have often wondered and was pretty intimidated to try out these two things before but I somehow got the courage to try them out in the end and I must say, I'm pretty happy about how they turned out even though the design is pretty simple :).
The pop up heart template was given to me by my dear friend CC Peyton......she found the free template online.......I kept it for months in my computer.....never printed it, never dared to give it a try.....until now. Thanks CC....I love it!! Although it was a bit difficult to make.....but I made it, with you in mind....I knew you would love to see me make it. So, dear friend, this one is for you ;).
Hopefully this is just a starting point for me to create more quilled alphabets in future......IF time permits me to do so that is! haha! Never seem to have enough time to make handmade cards these days.....too busy with other work and commitments. So indeed it was really nice to be able to make this card even though I didn't have a lot of time to make it.....
I made a video of the card so that you can see it at a closer view...... do check it out ;)
Iris folding

This is my new love. Iris folding......... :) While on leave, I decided to try out some techniques that I have been wanting to experiment on for a long time now.
Commonly, iris folding is done using folded pattern paper, but I had decided to use ribbons instead for my first try. Inspired by looking at images of iris folding handmade cards on the net and books, I just had to give it a go!
I have to admit, I do have quite a lot of ribbons available in my collection and I simply wanted to try out different craft techniques using ribbons. Iris folding is just one of the many ways I'm using to experiment with ribbons.
The parcel design above is actually a design I used from a book I bought some time ago by Michelle Powell. There are many free design templates inside her book that I can use and experiment on. The instructions in the book are pretty easy to follow and I can't wait to try out some more. Mind you, they are not "super easy" but reasonably easy enough for me to figure out and follow hehehehehe. I had to crack my head a bit in the beginning to do it but it's really worth the try and making it my own.
I made these cards for someone special......the soft pink one was given to her for her birthday, the other three are for her to give to whomever she wishes. :)
I do believe that the iris folding technique will be one of my favourite techniques to use for my handmade cards this year ;) Loving it!!
Mummy, Daddy and baby bird
19:24 |HB098
Here it is! The birthday card that my customer ordered for her husband's birthday together with the quilled blue flower frame.
Actually if you look at it closely, this design looks familiar right?? Well, that's because it's originally a design I recreated from my old design, V042. In that design, there are only 2 love birds, but in this one, my customer requested that I put a little baby bird in the middle to represent her first born. It's so cute! I rarely make little birdies like that so it was fun to make one that small. For the branch, I decided to make a long one so that I can fit all 3 birds together on it, like one happy family :).
One thing I loved about making this card this time is the fact that it has a new kind of envelope. I saw on YouTube the other day on how to make box envelopes using the scoring board and I'm just super excited about it! hehe! How can I not be excited about it right?? It's super cool that now I can make my very own special envelopes for my quilled cards....something that fits them perfectly, no more worries about whether or not the quilling will spoil the envelope or visa versa etc etc etc....bla bla bla.....yup, no more worries about all that. Problem solved. And of course the envelopes are made using thicker paper too to protect the quilling design. ;)
But still, I prefer to give quilled handmade cards by hand instead of posting them to my loved ones. It's a lot more thrilling to watch their happy reactions when they received the cards from me. Priceless! :)
Blue flowers note cards
08:29 |I guess my cards are getting simpler and simpler. I'm more into doing simple, straight to the point cards I suppose these days. And these simple note cards are an example of what I love doing lately. Flowers and leaves are my favourite subject and I just can't seem to get enough of them. Even if I keep repeating the same design or layout, still, I enjoy making them that way. These two cards were simply made for my February 2012 Blog Giveaway. I didn't show a close up view of the cards yesterday, so now, I'm giving you a chance to view them at a closer angle. :)
New features to old designs
22:46 |V041 (ADDED WORDINGS & BLACK CARD)
V042 (ADDED WORDINGS)
My V041 and V042 card designs were recreated especially for my customer who ordered these designs for her anniversary celebration. She adored both designs but just wanted some slight additions to it and I agreed to do it as it's just a minor one. The requests were to add names to the front of the card and some wordings inside it, plus the card itself was changed from white to black and the other one from white to metallic white.
The female bird which is dark pink in colour, I decided to add the "veil" at her head with a tiny white sequin flower just like how I did for my wedding love birds card. So glad my customer didn't mind me doing that for the cards hihihi. Even the quilled birds has a slight change to their body shapes. I love the new shape as it is much slimmer and somehow the inner coils looks more like their wings. You can compare the differences from the old designs and the new ones when you look at the links here -------> V041 & V042. Spot the differences! ;)
Actually, I haven't made these designs for quite sometime now.....and it's nice to be able to make them again....brings back old memories of making quite a few of the V041 card for my blog giveaways. Come to think of it, I got a lot of practice with quilling when doing those blog giveaways as most of the cards for giveaways are made with quilling decorations on it. :) Good practice for me! ;)

Miniature ketupat on cards
22:32 |HR023
My one and only raya card designs this year is mainly based on the ketupat as the subject matter. In this case, they are miniature ones.....as small as the 10 cents coin...hehehe. I used the smallest ribbon I have in my collection and made these teeny tiny ribbon ketupat and arranged them in the simplest way.
The design is so simple. But I used pretty card stocks for the design to give it a really nice touch. One is a metallic white card stock and the other is metallic gold in colour. It's so difficult to get a really good quality white card stock around Alor Setar but I was lucky to find one recently and it's the only one left in stock at the shop! So I bought one whole rim of it! LOL!
The card is an A6 size card and I'll just put simple raya wishes inside it. This is for my own personal use. I think I'll have some time this year to send raya cards for my relatives and friends......well, I hope I'll be able to post them that is....hehehe.....as I never seem to have the time to do so. :P
I have to make some for my Mom to use as well, she wants to send some raya cards to her friends......she's always looking forward to get free cards from me heheheeh...... :D Well, with simple designs like this, perhaps she can. ;)
Quilling alphabets
20:57 |V052
First time ever I got a request to quill alphabets on a card.....and in this case it's a love theme card. My customer was interested in the love birds card with the pop up inside but he wanted me to quill white alphabets instead of having those love birds on the card. And so that's what I did.
It was pretty tough because I've never done it before.....and didn't know how to go about it. He requested that I spell their names with combination of big and small alphabets "KaMiL <3 SyiMa". Now that it's done, I wish I had done it on a bigger sized card....I feel like this card is a bit small for those alphabets....oh well.....it's already done and I can't turn back....lesson learned.
I hope that I will have more chance to practice quilling alphabets in future on my handmade cards. I feel like it's even more difficult than quilling those love birds :P....seriously! haha! Now I really respect those who can quill alphabets so well. :)
Elephant sponge stickers
18:00 |V048
Elephant sponge stickers! Yes! I got me another cute strip of sponge stickers! I couldn't help myself. It's just too cute for me not to buy it so I got me one for my card making experiments hehe. This one has a fabric like texture on it and it has glitters too. Love it! It's more to elephant theme.....as you can see most of the stickers are of elephants.
I made one card.....just a simple card that can be made using this stickers. And then I wrote "I love you" to suit those cute elephants hehe. I just love playing with my new toys! :) They are so cute!
Red hot love birds
18:00 | W016
One day I woke up with this idea to have these love birds red in color on a white blank card . Not just red hot for the birds, but even for the branch, leaves, the tiny flower and the heart. :) I just wanted to see what it looks like on paper.....whether it looks the same as the idea I had in my vision or not. After completing it, I must say that it's the same as the vision I had in my head and I loved it. :) I'm not sure if others would agree as the colors are quite contrasting and the red color really pops from the white background.
I'm just experimenting with colors for this design. Trying to see what other colors would be suitable other than the colors I've done before. I must say that I really enjoy making this particular design. Somehow I just love the process of making it and how it looks in the end. Very therapeutic :).
